Friends, Romans...
Gather round the campfire children, i have a story to tell..
There once was a woman who lived in a shoe
She had so many children she didnt know what to do
she gave them some broth without any bread
then whipped them all soundly
and put them to bed.
This of course being the original version of the poem, what you read above.
This one is the "politically correct" version;
There was an old woman
Who lived in a shoe.
She was a kindhearted mom
Who knew exactly what to do.
She raised all her children
With patience and love.
Never once did she give them
A spank, shake or shove.
Her children all learned
To be gentle toward others,
And good parents too
When they became fathers and mothers.
From their days in the shoe
They learned this about living:
Kindness, not force,
Is the gift that keeps giving.
This of course is total and utter bullshit, no child will learn its mistakes without reinforcement. I myself was punished once, and only once for bad behaviour. This being because i was scared shitless to do anything again that would incur my parents wrath. Now, admittedly there are parents who take punishments too far, and theyre the bastards who need locking up. In my humble opinion, if a child does something naughty, you tell them what they have done wrong and why it is wrong and send them to bed. If their behaviour persists you give them a reminder as to why the behaviour is wrong...there are too many do gooders out there today who keep saying "oh no smacking your children is wrong!!" yes, smacking them for no good reason is wrong, punishing them for a good reason is perfectly ok. I mean i was punished and i turned out ok...i think :/

Ehhh, I don't think physical abuse to children should be tolerated unless they did something realllly wrong. My parents always used physical punishments against me, (could even call it child abuse >_>) and I turned out kinda bitter and hating them. Heh, I think talking with the child would work better, and if failing to behave then they could get privileges taken away from them or something.
I don't get the original nursery rhyme thing. Why'd she whip them all? Doesn't mention that they did anything wrong.. It's as if it's saying that they're punished for no reason. o_o
Meh..
When I worked at the mount after school club I found that just telling a kid to stop doing something worked sometimes, but certainly not all the time. There were a group of three girls who followed be around for an hour shouting fart songs, and then another day they insisted on tying me to the bench oblivious to the fact that I had to stop the boys playing football trying to beat the crap out of eat other. Reasoning with these girls, to say the least, didn't work.
But with others it did. I think it depends on the personality of the kid, there are some who would run a thousand miles if you asked them to, and there are those who would flatly refuse.
I think smacking is a situation nessesity, not some standard reponse. Certainly as the kid matures reasoning will play a more and more dominant role, but for younger kids actions speak louder than words.
Of course there is a difference between disiplining a kid and beating one. And it is obvious which is unacceptable.
(Orgy. Only once? Seriously?)
Yeah, i hate the children at the mount, they are evil, especially the ballet dancers.
Prissy little bitches.
I say that it should be up to the parents, i was never hit, ever. And look at me, im a screwed up little kid.
